72 Hour Requirement for Travel to Mexico
I have read on-line that one of the requirements for traveling with a
dog into Mexico is an examination with 72 hours of travel from a
licensed vet. I understand the need for documentation of vaccinations
but is documentation the vet visit really required?
Thank you,
JR
From Moderator
JR, I am afraid you are going to have to see a vet within the 72 hours, its not documenting that you been to a vet visit within 72 hours, but that the pet health certificate your present at the boarder has to be signed by a registered vet not more than 72 hours before entering Mexico.
The regulation reads as follows:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
US visitors to Mexico may bring a dog or cat by presenting the following certificates at the border: a pet health certificate signed by a registered veterinarian in the United States and issued not more than 72 hours before the animal enters Mexico; and a pet vaccination certificate showing that the animal has been treated for rabies, distemper, hepatitis and leptospirosis. Certification by Mexican consular authorities is not required for the health or vaccination certificate. A permit fee is charged at the time of entry into Mexico.......
AND don't forget pets taken out of the United States are subject upon return, to the same regulations as those entering for the first time.
Dogs must have a certificate showing they have been vaccinated against rabies at least 30 days prior to entry into the United States.
A general certificate of health is not required by CDC for entry of pet dogs and cats into the US although some airlines or states may require them.

Did you try AAA? I traveled to Mexico last summer and they provided me with all the information I needed! Lodging, info., trip driving directions, and info. on what my dog needed to enter Mexico and come back into the US. I only have a small Biejon, so I don't know about the cats.

Travel to Canada We will be traveling into Canada in our motor coach and our pet cat will be traveling with us. What documents are required to take her?
from C Williams
From Moderator: This is one of the most popular questions, so to bring everyone up to date following are the latest regulations regarding taking cats on a vacation into Canada.
Also, please see various comments below from other forum members.
Anyone else have any comments or suggestions?
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
U.S. Department of State
Bureau of Consular Affairs
Publication 11283
October 2006
Cats may enter Canada if accompanied by a valid rabies vaccination certificate issued, in either English or French, by a licensed veterinarian, which clearly identifies the cats and shows that they are currently vaccinated against rabies. This certificate should identify the cat, as in breed, color, weight, etc., plus indicate the name of the licensed rabies vaccine used (trade name), serial number and duration of validity (up to 3 years). Please note if a validity date does not appear on the certificate, then it is considered a one-year vaccine.
There is no waiting period between the time the cat is vaccinated for rabies and the time it is imported into Canada.
If the above requirements are not met, an inspector will order the owner to have the cat vaccinated for rabies within a period of time specified in the order and to provide the vaccination certificate to an inspector, all at the owner's expense.
Hello,
I will be relocating from California to Mexico in July.
I want to take my 10 year old cat and my 1 year old dog with me.
Anyone have any info on which airlines will support this??
Thanks, laura
From Moderator: Laura, Please check our airline information, Many more airlines are now accepting pets in cabin, unfortunately unless you have someone else traveling with you most airlines will only accept one pet per person (in cabin). In July most airliner restrict animals to cabin due to outside temperatures.
Travel into Canada Concerning canadian
Laws. What do we need to take a pet into Canada? George
Harrison
From
Moderator: Many people have similar concerns - Here is what we
have learned:
Canada
Domestic dogs and cats may enter from the United States, provided
each animal is accompanied by the following
The owner or someone appointed by the owner to accompany
the pet
A certificate issued by a licensed U.S. veterinarian of
the United States that clearly identifies the animal and certifies
that the dog and/or cat has been vaccinated against rabies
during the preceding 36-month period. Rabies tags alone may
not be sufficient.
To return to the U.S., pets taken out of the United States
and returned are subject to the same requirements as those
entering for the first time. Look here for the required documents,
etc. (current health certificate, proof of rabies, etc.)
United States
Pets taken out of the United States and returned are subject
to the same requirements as those entering for the first time.
For entry into the U.S., domestic dogs must be free of evidence
of diseases communicable to humans when examined at the port
of entry.
If the animal is not in apparent good health, further examination
by a licensed veterinarian may be required at the owner's
expense.
Dogs must be vaccinated against rabies at least 30 days
before entering the United States and the rabies shot given
in the last 12 months. A valid rabies vaccination certificate
needs to accompany the animal. This certificate should be
in English or be accompanied by a translation. It should identify
the animal, the dates of vaccination and expiration, and be
signed by a licensed veterinarian. If no expiration date is
specified, the certificate is acceptable if the date of vaccination
is no more than 12 months before the date of arrival. If the
vaccination was performed less than 30 days before arrival,
the animal may be admitted but must be confined at a place
of the owner's choosing until at least 30 days have passed
since the vaccination.
Important note: Some airlines require a Certificate of Health
from a veterinarian within 10 days of any travel date (traveling
both to and from the U.S.). This means that U.S. residents
returning to the U.S. might need to get a Certificate of Health
from an international vet if you stay in the foreign country
for more than 10 days.

Our experience: We have driven into Canada with
our dog and returned via car several times without anyone asking
us to show information on our dog (maybe just luck of the draw).
However, we always take the appropriate paperwork, JUST IN CASE!
NEVER assume that you won't need the appropriate paperwork, etc.
when traveling into Canada and back. ALWAYS HAVE THE PAPERWORK
WITH YOU - THEN YOU PROBABLY WON'T NEED IT!
Moving from Florida to California!
From:
Rosemarie
Hi there! I have two cats, Peaches and Patches, they are about
18 pounds in weight so it is kind of difficult to take them
by air, being that airlines now a days have a lot of restrictions.
My husband and I are moving to California in October from Florida
and if anybody can give me cool ideas on what is the best way
to travel with them, that will be comfortable for them and us.
Thank you
Dog over
the ocean?
From : Laura How do I get my dog
from the States to England without putting her on a plane?. Since
they are getting ready to drop their restrictions, I need to plan
a trip. One web site said that the QE2 had a kennel, but I have
not been able to confirm. If they don't are there any other options
of taking a dog on a transatlantic ship at all?
Note from Moderator. There are cargo ships that
also carry passengers, some of which will accept pets. You would
have to contact a travel agent to find out. Also, the QE2 does
accept small pets on their Transatlantic voyages for an additional
fee. The pet must have proper papers and remain in the ship's
kennel, except for short walks. You'll have to check with Cunnard
for details, as they are quite strict in their rules. There is
an online form you can complete for questions at www.cunardline.com.au/contact.html.
Note that the QE2 will no longer make transatlantic crossings after 2003.
In addition you may want to check with Organizations and firms
that specialize in transporting animals world wide. We have several
links on our public transportation
page that you may also want to look into.
Travelin'
with the top down
From:

Anyone out there have a convertible and have small dogs that need
to travel?
We have our puppies (5 lbs each) harnessed and strapped in the
back to a 3-point belt, but they seem to often catch air and not
like the air blowing in their faces. I'm thinking that we just
can't drive around with the top off with them in the back, but
just wondering if anyone has done this successfully and if so,
HOW?
Thanks,

We are planning to travel across the border to mexico (Al Gadone)
from Yuma Az. Are there any restrictions when crossing the border
with a small dog?
From:
Greg, California
As long as you have your dogs shots up to date I don't think you
should have any problems. I travel to Baha frequently and just
have to show his registration for San Diago and his up to date
shots form from his vet (especially rabies) and I don't have any
problems.
Overnight With Large Dogs
Note from Moderator: You should check your local authorities,
while what Greg said is true (see below), sometimes different
states interpret the laws differently.
CDC has regulations governing importation of the following pets:
dogs, cats, turtles, and monkeys. Pets taken out of the United
States are subject, upon return, to the same regulations as those
entering for the first time. The U.S. government does not require
general certificates of health for pets. However, because airlines
sometimes require health certificates for pets traveling with
them, you should check with your airline prior to your travel
date.
Dogs
Pet dogs are subject to inspection at ports of entry for evidence
of infectious diseases that can be transmitted to humans. If a
dog appears to be ill, further examination by a licensed veterinarian
might be required. In addition, dogs must be vaccinated against
rabies at least 30 days prior to entry into the United States,
except for puppies younger than 3 months of age and dogs originating
or located for 6 months or more in areas that are free of rabies.
A dog with an unexpired vaccination certificate meets these requirements.

We have 3 Dobermans and wish to travel with them. Our preference
would be for overnight stays on the first floor of a motel.
A recent Forum message suggested the Best Western chain will provide
accommodation, which is the first such report that we have ever
heard of. We would appreciate hearing the experience of
any one who has made overnight stays with large dogs when travelling
by vehicle. Thanks, Bill Moore
Great
Place to Visit
From:
Roger Tynan, Philadelphia, Penn.
A great place to visit is Williamsburg, Pennsylvania and stay
at any of the Best Westerns! They treated us great and did not
charge extra for Terri our 5 year old Poodle. There were all sorts
of place that we could walk Terri and he really enjoyed seeing
the sheep and cows and horses (he was a little afraid of the horses).
We have been back several times and were always treated well at
any of the Best Westerns. The rooms are clean and they didn't
place us in a smoking section and they made sure we had a ground
floor room. Just call ahead, because they are always busy and
some close during the winter months.
